A quintet of Greene County poets are among poets from 143 cities and towns in 75 Iowa counties whose poetry has been selected for publication in Lyrical Iowa 2014. Greene County poets selected are Lorene M. Conner, Sarah Nicholson, Colleen O’Brien and Victoria Riley, all of Jefferson, and Nancy Bardole Hanaman of Rippey.
Lyrical Iowa 2014 is expected to be ready for distribution later this month. An annual publication of the Iowa Poetry Association, the book’s pages offer the best poems received in a contest earlier this year. “Poem content and style varies greatly,” said editor Lucille Morgan Wilson, “from free verse expressions of childhood memories or grief at the loss of a loved one, to rhymed jubilation at the return of springtime.”
The 175-page book can be ordered from Wilson at 2325 61st Street, Des Moines, IA 50322, for $10, shipped postpaid to anywhere in the U.S. with check payable to the Iowa Poetry Association. Some previous editions are also available.
New contest opens Jan. 1: Simultaneous with announcement of the 69th edition of Lyrical Iowa is the invitation to participate in the 2015 contest.
